Celebrating 100 Years

Updated: Nov 17, 2018

Can you imagine a world without the computer, television, smart phone, microwave, video games, internet, digital camera, hair dryer, or disposable diapers (plus so much more)? When Evelyn Canty came into this world in 1917 these items were nonexistent. Evelyn came into a very different world and has since experienced more than I could ever imagine.

When I was asked to photograph Evelyn at her 100th Birthday Party this past October I was so excited. I could only imagine all the things Evelyn must have witnessed in her lifetime. What was Evelyn's life like? What did she experience? What are her fondest memories? All I could think was that I was going to get to capture a time in someone's life that is monumental.

Let's go back to 1917 to better understand how the world looked as Evelyn was born...

In 1917....

– Only 8 percent of homes had a landline telephone

– The average US hourly wage was 22 cents an hour

– The hamburger bun was invented

– The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph

I love looking at these photographs of Evelyn as she was growing up.... I wonder what she was thinking when these photos were taken?

An interesting fact that I learned about Evelyn was that she was a member of the Central Florida Shell Club, Astronaut Trail Shell Club, and the Conchologists of America. Her family shared with me that when Evelyn was 80 she flew overseas with her shell club to go shelling. The family did not know where Evelyn was but they do recall hearing from her saying to not worry that she "survived the typhoon". They had no idea about the typhoon either. (Image 80 years old traveling, shelling, and surviving a typhoon). I just love Evelyn's story.

Another interesting thing I learned about Evelyn is that she still reads the entire Orlando Sentinel every day. Her family told me that she loves to read. She also enjoys playing the organ, gardening, shelling, ceramics, and traveling. Maybe this is a secret to living to 100 - staying busy and having fun hobbies! Ok, so let's get to Evelyn's party! Evelyn's family gathered in honor of her and made some great memories throughout the night. There was cake, a champaign toast, Evelyn got to meet her great-great-grandson for the first time, LOTS OF PHOTOS, food, and so much more. Check it out...

Here's Evelyn getting ready for her photoshoot :)

Celebrating in style.

Where's the CAKE?

Evelyn is the mother of 5 children, 11 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild. Check out the family photos that we took.

Here is Evelyn with her great grandchildren....

Here is the photo of Evelyn getting to hold her great-great grandson for the first time. How sweet is this? 100 Years vs. 1 Month :)

A toast to Evelyn's 100th Birthday.

Photographing Evelyn at her 100th Birthday will always be a special memory for me. I am so thankful that I was chosen to capture such sweet memories of a beautiful women. Leave a comment and let me know your thought!!
